Alkaline Lifestyles
You may wonder “what the hey” is an alkaline lifestyle? Maybe you ARE familiar with it but don’t know the specifics. I call it a lifestyle cuz it’s NOT a diet, it’s a way of life. Alkaline living is getting a lot of press lately and a Google search yields pages and pages of results. But thinking back just a year or two, no one even knew “what the hey” I was talking about. Now there’s alkaline water in grocery stores-amazing! So it’s high time we spread the word about how to live this lifestyle and how to enjoy delicious food while you’re at it.
It’s pretty simple, really. Essentially the goal is to bring your body’s pH –acid versus alkaline– into balance by consuming a higher volume of alkaline foods and fluids. Ideally 70% to 80% of each daily meal should be alkaline foods combined with 2-4 liters of alkalizing water thru the day. Super hydrating daily with water and adding powdered greens is very energizing and flushes unwanted toxins and is a super way to flush fat cells too. The 70-80% portion for alkaline foods is basically vegetables, mostly raw-some warmed, either whole or juiced and low sugar fruits. The 20%-30% acidic balance can be made up of cool or cooked foods such as whole grains, seeds, nuts, legumes, proteins-plant or animal-preferably organic turkey or chicken and the sweeter fruits in moderation. Some Alkavorians do consume a little tiny bit of dairy and eggs, many do not. The least processed food possible is key. In a nut shell, one could easily transition to this lifestyle diet just by increasing their raw greens or gently warmed veggies to 70-80% on your plate at lunch and dinner and fresh veggie juice in the morning.
An Alkaline balanced body is healthy, vibrant, and energetic, free of sickness and disease. An Acidic body is one that is degenerating, breaking down, showing a myriad of symptoms of ill health from the simplest form being a cold or a rash all the way to diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. We all know 1-5 people or more that are ill or dying of these or many other terrible diseases that can be solved with a change in their lifestyle and diet. High levels of stress, negative thoughts, lack of exercise and poor shallow breathing (which most of us do all day long) all play a key role in this lifestyle and are acid forming. Changing your diet will improve your pH and reduce your symptoms to a certain degree, but you must also manage and balance these other pieces of the puzzle to reach optimal health. The most amazing thing about this alkaline lifestyle is that it is measurable because it IS a science. If you have a live blood analysis done by a trained microscopist (where you can see your blood cells actively moving on screen) before you begin this lifestyle change, after as little as 30 days, you will see a change in your blood cells and the fluid that they live in. It is utterly astonishing to see the yeast, parasites, (we all have them to some degree if you eat meat), stress indicators, pre-cancerous crystals, and many other unhealthy organisms floating around in your blood and how they change or disappear with only a diet adjustment and further more, with a healthy lifestyle.
I see the trend toward alkalizing growing in leaps and bounds because there is such a great awareness of how SAD the typical North American diet is. Made up largely of meat, dairy, sugars, alcohol, saturated fats, highly processed foods and caffeine, we have become a very sick nation looking for quick cures from pills. With the ever increasing rate of grim diagnosis’s of disease that we are surrounded by, I believe many of us are at a cross road. Change your Diet …..or Die. The number of books being published on healthy eating is at an all time high and many of them are slamming the typical diets that many of us thought were “healthy”! Instead of maintaining what we thought was a healthy body we have created a hostile acidic environment within our body that now needs correcting before we develop disease or before we die from one we’ve just been diagnosed with. The beauty is that you CAN reverse the negative effects of an unhealthy diet if you sincerely have the will to do so.
There’s no doubt about it, change what you eat and the way you live to more alkaline choices and your symptoms will diminish and slowly disappear. I am living proof and so are many others who have even reversed cancer and are living a vibrant life, well into their late nineties with very little degeneration. It’s really been more than a 100 years that this model of healthy living has been buried due to the mainstream medical model that has been blind to it but finally….. the awareness of how to live a life of health and well being, free of disease, is surfacing. I challenge you to try it for 30 days and see how much you like the gain of energy and the positive changes that happen. A food chart to help guide you, showing the value of alkalinity or acidity, is right here.
Where to Start and What to Avoid
Identifying WHY you want to alkalize is a good place to begin. What’s your motivation? Is there a pain strong enough to make you stick with it? How badly do you want to be healthy? Are you choosing this or is someone else? Are you craving energy and vibrancy? Aren’t we all? Then give it a go for 30 days and see how you feel, see if you are addicted to the feeling? You might be pleasantly surprised and change your life forever! I did! Forever, no lie!
So a good way to begin is to decide- would I choose cold turkey or a slow go? Cold turkey if you are not chronically ill can do wonders and work out the toxins fast which means you may feel lousy until they flush thru and then you’ll be ready to change the world. A slow go means less pain but slower gain. Either way, you will be WAY better off than not doing anything different at all.
I recommend reading a few books before or while you begin because knowledge is POWER. It will inspire you to keep on trucking and you will develop a lifestyle habit that you will become addicted to. For further reading I recommend picking up a soft cover copy for under $10 of the pH Miracle by Dr. Robert O. Young. As a scientist with over 40 years of research, exploring and uncovering he shares the steps to gain control of your health again. Another recently published book that I am devouring is Crazy, Sexy, Diet by Kris Carr who is a cancer survivor who alkalized to heal and has brought together a wealth of knowledge thru her own experience and that of many health experts that will inspire you to take the plunge.
The following is a list of things to begin eliminating or reduce your consumption of. After skimming the list it may seem to you like there’s nothing good left to bother eating but you’d be surprised. If you haven’t looked at my recipe page then check it out cuz there’s some incredibly mouth watering ways to nourish your body that will leave you craving more and feeling more energetic after a meal than you ever have before.
Foods that Acidify:
If you really want to kick it up a notch the best way to kick the acid is a juice feast where you nourish and flush the body at the same time in order to alkalize and regenerate healthy new cells. It’s possible to put you one year ahead in the healing process by beginning with a juice feast cleanse. For the full details and recipes on a great way to jump start your alkaline journey see this post here.
All living things exist because of a balanced pH level. In nature some “plant varieties” thrive in an alkaline soil where as others prefer a slightly acidic soil. When these conditions are not ideal symptoms begin to occur. Most inexperienced gardeners would head to the garden center and purchase a product recommended to cure the ailing plant and spray it on the leaves and the plant would perk up but shortly there after it needs another application. However a well seasoned gardener knows that an adjustment to the soil in which the plant grows is what will improve the health of the plant.
Our bodies that are all identically designed to function as the “human variety” require the same pH balance and treatment. The terrain in which our cells exist is the environment that must be pH balanced just as the roots of the plant growing in soil. Our inner terrain is everything. When it is out of kilter we are out of kilter.
If we can clean up our systems, pair it with a healthy outlook on life, manage our stress levels, and incorporate daily fitness we can experience optimal health and a life of longevity and vibrancy. THIS is how we were meant to exist on this planet and we should settle for nothing less.
If you require an alkaline coach to make this shift possible, I get it. If you are seriously ill it’s the best way back to health and I highly recommend you reach out for support and guidance on this journey. It’s a life changing path and having a coach will bring greater success and a confidence that will drive you to become the healthy You that you deserve to be.

Hi Julie,
Ive been very interested in the kind of life style that you have described. I do have a few questions for you though. You mentioned fermented foods as one to avoid. Ive done some research on the healing properties of fermented teas like kombucha as well as apple cider vinegar. If I use these products regularly am I causing my body more harm than good?
Thanks for your help and blog!
Sarah, I tend to listen to Dr. Robert O. Young as I understand his philosophy of yeast, fungus and mold contributing to disease. I avoid all fermented foods for this reason as disease prevention. Occasionally it is impossible so I let it go esp. when out in a restaurant but as a rule I don’t eat them. Thanx for stopping by:)
Hi Julie,
I’m interested in the alkaline lifestyle, however, right now I suffer from muscle inflammation (which im sure will benefit from an alkaline lifestyle), degenerating disc in my lower back, and my knees pop and sometimes ache whenever I squat. While living an alkaline lifestyle, will the fruits and vegetables help with bone strengthening?
Dimonique, the alkaline lifestyle is basically an anti-inflammatory diet that will immensely help you and all of your symptoms if you are committed to making some adjustments to relieve your symptoms. Alkalizing would be sooo beneficial for you. I recommend hydrating really well with alkaline water and minerals. Drinking 3-4 liters of water with super greens and then 1 glass morning and night of the phor salts will work wonders for you. These will flush many toxins from your body, slowly providing relief, persistence is key. I would also guess that you are low in good omega oils thus the knee popping. I like Nutra Sea fish oils and take them generously in smoothies and salad dressings or by the spoonful. You can hardly over dose on these according to Dr. Robert O. Young and his pH Miracle book which is a really good book to read. You most certainly will strengthen bones if you eliminate dairy and replace it with volumes of leafy greens in salads, smoothies and green juices. Kale is very high in calcium and is full of chlorophyll which builds blood cells that build bone. Milk leaches calcium from our bones and is one of the leading causes of osteoporosis. Let me know if you need any further support, I’d be happy to help.
Hi Julie, my name is Sandra and I am 47 years old and for the past 10 years I have been increasing in a lot of joint pain, this past year it has increased to very chronic pain in the joints and now my feet are stiffing up and the pain to walk on them is getting horrible. Around 10 years ago I went to a vitamin shop where they had one of those Dr.’s called iridologists…and he told me that I had high acidity and that I had crystal deposits on my joints and that it would get worse in time if I didn’t take care of it….well I guess what he said has come to be, now I am in really bad shape. Anyway I have heard some things about this alkaline since then … But now my question is “Where do I start to get this PH balance on it’s way?” All help you can give would be immensely appreciated…. THANK YOU!
Sandra, You’ve come to the right place in your life to realize that you can certainly find health again thru your diet and lifestyle.
I would suggest getting Dr. Robert O. Young’s Book The pH Miracle as well as think about doing a juice feast as per this post I did. He also outlines it more clearly in his book, this is rather my version. A juice feast is a good way to begin detoxing and cleansing. Depending on your particular health picture the detoxing can be extreme or you may feel cold or flu like symptoms, this is normal. I highly recommend consulting a nutritionist or naturopath if you have one you know of in your community who can gage and guide your success. I am still studying and can make generic suggestions only since I haven’t all your details and even then it’s best to have someone chart your progress especially because you have chronic symptomology. I need to say this so that you know you are following suggestions at your own risk. From my experience a juice feast has been fantastic for people with your symptoms but everyone is different, if you can consider this.
There is an alkaline food guide on the site to use as a reference for what to eat. If you can work toward a high proportion of alkaline foods upwards of 70,80 or 90% alkaline for disease states you will see improvement I’m sure. there are many recipes on the site here that are healthy and yummy. Avoid the treat recipes that have dates, or fruits as you want to avoid sugars even if they are from fruit.
Let me know if you have any further questions, but do pick up the book:) It will make so much more sense once you read his explanation and you will be more motivated once you are empowered with knowledge. Pls keep me posted on your progress. Psst. I’d also suggest a live blood analysis (to assess your current state of health and to monitor your progress back to optimal health based on what’s really going on in your body- you will be able to see the problems in your blood and monitor them) if you can find a practitioner in your neighbor hood as well as a hair analysis to measure your minerals-this is important for you especially cuz you need the right nutrients to correct your pain and crystals. All the best to you. I’m excited for your journey back to optimal health and I know it’s possible!! Pssst. Wheat grass will be your friend! It will help you immensely! Let me know if you can’t find practitioners in your area. I can try to help:)
Hi Julie!
Just came across this site now and am eager to read through more of your posts … first and foremost though, I suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease and have high blood pressure, which I am trying to reduce naturally to prevent my nephrologist from adding another med to my existing one. I am about to turn 40. Can you tell me if there is any reason I should avoid this diet with the CKD (or is is quite the opposite?!)? Many thanks, Molly
HI Molly, I truly believe that this alkaline diet will be helpful for you. I did a quick read about CKD and it’s like many other diseases- involves inflammation and an overly acidic nature in the body. Increasing your veggie intake of raw and steamed or lightly sauteed veggies will be very beneficial for CKD and High blood pressure as will eliminating dairy and reducing your consumption of meat and all animal products (sticking to organic meats of course) and filling in with plant proteins like avocados, hemp seeds, nuts and seeds and legumes or plant protein powders for smoothies as well as including a good dose of healthy omega oils, while avoiding high sodium foods and all processed foods. I found this link that suggests many veggies as being excellent for CKD so you are on the right track with an alkaline lifestyle. This other link http://www.davita.com/kidney-disease/diet-and-nutrition/lifestyle/top-15-healthy-foods-for-people-with-kidney-disease/e/5347 is very helpful for high blood pressure with lots of ideas for supplements and food http://www.preventivemedicineps.com/Cardio-Vascular-System/a-holistic-approach-to-treating-high-blood-pressure.htmlI believe that living an alkaline lifestyle and managing your stress and your thoughts effectively as well as exercising regularly is the key to every single disease, keeping it at bay or reversing it. I hope this helps and that you can improve your health with some dedicated focus on your diet and lifestyle. Please keep me posted:)
Julie, I can’t tell you how I appreciate this extra mile you’ve gone for me. I’m looking forward to reading through the links and will indeed keep you posted … my next appointment with the kidney doctor is in one month’s time and I feel that the changes I’ve made recently (more whole foods, less red meat, more line caught fish etc) has already made a difference to how I feel on many levels. Next, and hardest steps for me, will be eliminating alcohol (white wine esp), cottage cheese, toast/crackers. But I know you are wishing me luck and I will get trawling through some recipes on this site. Many thanks again, you are super kind! Molly
Oh Molly, so glad you are starting to feel the difference. RE the wine, find yourself something you REALLY enjoy and have that on hand all the time. I love lots of lemon or lime in water or soda water and you can sweeten with stevia, add a few strawberries if you like. Also try raw almond butter on crisp cold celery, it does it for me every time! Let me know how your next appointment goes:)
Hello,
Thank you for the information -it was very informative and detailed as to how i can begin to start living an alkaline lifestyle. I suffer from uveitis and VKH which is an autoimmune disease that in my case causes inflammation in my eyes. Can you please tell me if you have any past post or information or know of any other frequent visitors of the site that has what i have? I have been searching for a holistic approach and feel this would be the best and beneficial treatment for me right. I am currently on medications and have been told by doctors that i need to be on them for life and i really prefer not to. thank you and any additional information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Julie! So I had my follow up appointment yesterday with my Kidney Dr and was eager to let you know the results. He had the results of my 24 hr urine test up on his screen as I sat down and he simply asked me “So; what’s changed? What are you doing differently?” I told him about my diet changes, the fact that I had stopped drinking alcohol, had started exercising more and my resulting positive attitude because of all this. (Fact is, since all these changes I am feeling re connected to my intuition, which I had feared I was losing, and my deep sense of faith. The world is a sunnier place. A cloud has lifted. And, personally, I am sure this has as much to do with the healing process as the physical changes.) He told me the urine test showed I was barely spilling any protein and that my sodium level was very low. That he was extremely happy with these results and that I didn’t need another med! I was amazed. He could literally SEE the changes on screen. My body told him about the changes I had made before I opened my mouth! (I have been spilling significant protein for 6 years plus now. And on the blood pressure front, it has generally dropped, although varies wildly. The Dr was not too worried about this, happy with the average result and realising that with 3.5 year old twin monkeys, sorry, I meant to say boys, that it will rise and fall throughout the day;)) This has really given me the encouragement I needed to step up a notch and carry on. I stopped drinking with the help of my GP (as I was in that habit that so many of us are … drinking to relax, and then once the bottle was opened, drinking too much … and I honestly didn’t think I could stop, but I did!) and am so grateful for that. It’s made everything else so much easier. I check in with your food chart quite a lot and I think right now I am about 65/35% alkaline to acid. We just took a holiday to Dorset where everything slipped, think fish and chips, lol, but as I said, this visit has given me the kick I needed to get back on track. I just want to say thankyou so much for taking the time to reply to my first email. It made all the difference to know you were rooting for me, and I really appreciate it. I’m seeing him again in 6 months, so I will be sure to give you an update. With Love, Molly X
Awe Molly…. this message gave me goose bumps! I’m so thrilled for you, this is the best news ever, you totally made my day! Congrats to you for all your hard work, it certainly paid off! It really is amazing how our body can heal when we give it what it really needs. I see you living a perfectly healthy life if you maintain this lifestyle and attitude. It’s a new lease on life don’t you think? Thank you so very much for sharing and posting your results so other readers can appreciate your story and your good news:)
Hi Jessica, I’ve peeked on Google a little to read about your situation but honestly don’t know a lot about it. What I do know that I have learned from Dr.Robert O. Young and thru my holistic nutrition studies is that the body has an innate ability to heal itself and will do it’s very best if we give it what it needs. I believe what it needs is for you to provide it with alkalinity thru whole foods and pure water while nurturing a healthy attitude and stress level. Any inflammation that you are experiencing will be minimized or eliminated which will certainly improve the symptoms. I would whole heartedly say that by embracing an alkaline lifestyle you will see improvements, I can’t say how much but I know your body will do it’s very best if you do your very best and you might even see miracles happen. Hope has to exist for a miracle to happen. Dr. Young says one disease is all disease and can be reversed with one cure. Alkalinity! It’s how our body was designed to function. If I were you I would certainly find a microscopist to do your live blood analysis so you can see your current picture and then monitor your changes and success. You’d be amazed at what is visible and how you can be guided with the right nutrients that may be out of balance in order to heal successfully. All my best to you and please, please keep me posted. I’d love to hear how you are doing and pls hollar with any other questions:) Cheers.
